Written and directed by Miki Magasiva, Tinā follows a grieving Samoan mother who takes a substitute teaching role and leads a school choir in the aftermath of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The film’s heartfelt portrait of family, faith, and recovery has resonated across Aotearoa and the Pacific.
Starring acclaimed actress Anapela Polata‘ivao in the title role, Tinā had its world premiere as the Opening Night film at the 44th Hawai‘i International Film Festival (HIFF44), before returning home to a warm reception in Aotearoa. It opened in New Zealand cinemas on 27 February 2025 and has become one of the country’s most successful recent local releases, grossing over NZ$5 million at the box office.
The music is central to the film’s impact. Tuilagi Dr Igelese Ete led the choral direction and music team, drawing on Pacific choral traditions he has championed throughout his career. Tinā was filmed on locations in Auckland and Christchurch, capturing both the urban and cultural landscapes of Aotearoa.
Following its New Zealand success, the film opened in Australian cinemas in May 2025, and has screened across the Pacific, including Samoa, bringing its message of hope and connection to wider audiences. Director Miki Magasiva has described the work as “a love letter to our mothers,” honouring the strength and guidance of Pacific women.
Tinā stands as a landmark in Pacific cinema — a story that blends cultural pride with universal themes of healing, reminding us of the power of community and song.
